Unit 21631

Category: Cut    dug in 2014

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: burial cut

Data Category Information: Description: burial

Description: burial cut placed in central-eastern part of sealed structure of B.132. Not fully excavated in 2014.

Discussion: A cut (U.21631) recorded as almost perfect circular incise within the surface of the room-fill (U.21622) appeared to be the burial cut placed next to western face of the (Eastern) wall of B.132. The described incise came out to be a relatively deep one. Considering stratigraphic relationship it seems that the feature was performed in the somewhat early stage of B.77. Most plausibly during constructional phase of mentioned edifice. The above statement is supported by the fact that the cut was not registered on the surfaces of the subsequent make-up layers (U.22084, 22080), but within the deposit regarded as room-fill (U.21622) of earlier structure (B.132).
The edges of the original extension of the pit was defined without difficulty by reason of mineral salts concentrated on the edges all around the cut (U.21631). The excavation of the unit was ceased at the stage of revealing human bones (Sk.-21636) in the southern part of the feature (F.7632). The estimated time of further exploration would have not allowed to accomplish the work by the end of the 2014 season.

2015 SEASON:
In the course of the research work in 2015 the examination of the burial cut (21631) had been continued and finally completed. The unit appeared to be very deep, reaching 0,48m of depth. Its southern part appeared to be inverted and reminded a shape of bell. The base of the cut was uneven and rely mostly on the revealing a rubble of fallen fragments of brick mortar and plaster. The only chronological relationship between others features were observed with the southward burial F.7633 which seems to be earlier considering the fact that the cut 21631 truncated Northern part of nearby feature.
