Description: Wooden post engaged with southern wall F. 7705. It was recognized during excavation to actually consist of two timbers, and moreover, that the entirety of the material was not actually burnt... Some is wood, rather than charcoal.
Discussion: Engaged post on southern wall F. 7705, excavated by Marvin Demicoli according to Eleni Asouti's protocol. Originally this post was thought to be a filling a small hole and the exposed area was thus started to be excavated. However, upon going down to a depth of about 20cm, it was noted that the post extended to the south-east in an area that was still covered by a floor deposit. Upon consulting with the area supervisor, it was decided that the part of the floor covering the post could be excavated in order to fully expose the post in plan. Possible separate pieces of wood were noted, some possibly inserted as wedges. Given that the charred wood could not be extracted as a whole, it was decided to only excavate the north part of the post in order to expose a section of the rest of post in-situ to the south. Plaster was noted to be filling gaps between the wood pieces. At a depth of about 30cm from the top, the post material started to gradually turn to brown in colour indicating that the wood was not completely charred. This wood material was extremely friable and was turning into dust upon brushing. A conservator was called to attempt to consolidate the wood in the exposed section before taking it out. The wood was consolidated with a paraloid-acetone solution. Excavation was resumed after the consolidation process was complete. Larger pieces of charcoal were recovered but the wood was still crumbling into dust. The posthole narrowed down into two points at the bottom thus suggesting that the posthole contained at least two separate wooden posts. The post hole was 41cm by 12cm at the top. It divided into two postholes at a depth of about 35cm. At this depth, the southern post was 25cm long by 5cm wide, while the northern one was 10cm long by 5cm wide. Wood from both posts seems to be of the oak type. A large piece of charcoal (tied with a plastic zip-tie) was recovered from the upper part of the southern post. Sediments from the surface cleaning were kept as a sample (S1), while the large charcoal lumps were bagged as a separate sample (S2) from the smaller charcoal fragments (S3) that were sent for flotation.
