Unit 22699
Category: Layer dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: painted plaster on threshold
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: ridge; Material: white clay; Deposition: multiple; Basal Spit: painted
Discussion: This is the only remaining evidence of the paint on threshold F. 7967. It is a small square of plaster on the E end of the threshold, found beneath the final white plastering event which covered nearly the entire building (u. 22642). When it was excavated, several layers of plaster came off as one since the bottom layer was so much less strongly bonded to the makeup than the layers were to each other, so we have no way of knowing how many painted layers there were. However, the topmost layer was contiguous with the layer u. 22684, a painted layer of plaster that covered not only the platform but also the bench and the wall F. 7712. The models and recording photos of burials F. 7961 & 7962 may show the relationship between the burials and this painted layer of the threshold. Because the unit was so small, the entirety was collected in samples.
Consistency: compact
Colour: white plaster, painted red
Texture: plaster
Bedding: compound-- many layers of plaster were unnegotiably stuck together and came off as one; we have no way of knowing whether all such layers were painted
Inclusions: none
Post-depositional Features: erosion
Basal Boundary: clear-- came down on plaster floor of sp. 556 and makeup of threshold F. 7967
