Interpretive Categories: fill of a shallow depression pit

Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit

Discussion: The infill (U.23602) of the pit (F.8342) was easy to distinguish from the surroundings due to the color texture and consistency. The unit appeared to be very small considering the volume of recorded deposit within the cut (U.23603). The lack of any finds might be easy to explain regarding presumable interpretation, that connects the pit to a holding purpose for a vessel. Regarding the proximity of the hearth F.8339 as well as context of others similar pits (F.8343/8335, 8341, 8344, 8333, 8332), the above presented assumption sheds a light on possible food preparation activities. As such the fill U.23602 that sealed the shallow depression U.23603 must be regarded as a secondary deposition which aimed to make even the surface before laying the earliest floors of Sp.531. Consequently the described fill had nothing to do with the actual role of the pit 8342 whose purposes should be referred rather to specific shape of the cut
