Unit 2528

Category: layer    dug in 1997

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: grave fill

Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 80 x 53 x 26 cm

Discussion: Hackberry behind left elbow of skeleton; thick phytolith cover in front of left humerus as well as traces throughout the soil. Also, hackberry in front of lower leg? Lots of voids around skeleton. Phytoliths around upper left scapula, all over pelvis (sample 2), and lines around the skeleton as though a bag/shroud/mat. The soil around the bones was often loose and possibly due to the numerous voids, I could hear where the bones were when scraping the soil. Phytolith continued throughout mainly textile tape in a ring around the skeleton, across right leg, shoulders/neck, through jaw. Also a patch below right ribs and next to left leg -- suggest a bag/sack tied tightly with tape. Lump of chalk between right femur and fibula (x2), and worked bone between right femur and tibia near knee (x1). Thin layers of yellow ochre in front of lumbar vertebra -- no sample taken.

Execution: leaf trowel, dental pick, brush

Condition: cool to warm, calm (time lapse photography restricted movements)

Consistency: weak

Colour: 2.5 y 4/3 olive brown

Texture: sandy clay silt

Bedding: massive? Seems layered in places, but this could be due to decomposition of large amounts of grasses on a skeleton

Inclusions: occ. small shell <2%, occ. small bone <2%, charcoal <1cm <2%, frag. of pot, salts 5%, stone <2cm=<2%

Post-depositional Features: root disturbance most noticeable in lower levels-- roots growing inside long bones and skull of skeleton and through the base of the cut.

Basal Boundary: roughly flat, anthropogenic, not always clear due to overcutting to remove fragile bones.
