Area: South

Interpretive Categories: Mortar

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: mortar; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 0.34 x 0.43 x 0.16

Discussion: (2871) represented the mortar material in wall [88] which was removed in 1998 for archive and flotation sampling. The mortar was more mixed than the brick of [88] with patches of plaster clumps and lumps of clay in places, but was fairly homogeneous otherwise, so recognisably the same material. The remainder of the mortar (about a further 2 courses) was removed and dry sieved with the brick of (2866) until the wall had been removed to a stable level.

Recognition: Clear colour and textual difference - grey and blocky

Definition: Clearly distinguishable from the brick of [88]

Execution: Pick and trowel

Condition: Dry

Consistency: Firm

Colour: light greyish brown 10YR 6/2

Texture: Ashy sandy silt loam

Bedding: Massive in general but with huge globules of plaster/clay in places so quitevariable through the wall

Inclusions: 5 % charcoal (flecks and small pieces); 2% plaster silicates; 5% plaster (lumps); 5% clay (lumps); 2 % burnt clay; <2% shell; occasional hackberries; <2% bone (small pieces)

Post-depositional Features: animal burrowing and salt crystallisation and weathering

Basal Boundary: The basal boundary was sharp, prominent and constructional. In places the surface was uneven, but generally it generally was smooth and level.
