Unit 30040
Category: Skeleton dug in 2016
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: primary,secondary
Data Category Information: none
Description: Northernmost skull in F7963. Packed in lumpy marl/plaster material (fill unit 32390). Postcranial remains orginally given different skeleton number (Sk 30045) were directly articulated with the skull and belong to the same individual.
Discussion: Skull (30040) of primary or secondary flexed inhumation. Appears that bones were placed in burial cut, and then wet plaster material was packed in cut over the bones. Given the displacement/separation of the bones of the right elbow, it seems that the skeleton was at least partially defleshed when placed in the cut. Sacrum and right pelvic bone were also slightly displaced. Lower limb postions unclear - possibly disarticulated prior to burial, or disturbed by a later event.
Deposition event seems later/cut into that of Sk32330 (red pigmented skull - not yet fully excavated in 2016). It is possible that sk 32330 is a loose, isolated cranium placed as a secondoray deposition into the fill of Sk 30040. However, this scenario seems unlikely given the position of 32330 below skull 30040 and outside of the plaster infill.
A deposit of loose, mixed juvenile and adult bone north of this skeleton (unit not yet assigned, some bones removed with infill 22676 zone C/D material - not fully excavated in 2016) cuts into the plaster infill, and therefore seems to be a later deposition event.
