Unit 30319

Category: Layer    dug in 2013

Area: South

Interpretive Categories: Bin infill

Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: bin; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit

Discussion: The outline of this infill was initially identified after the make-up layer above it (U.30314) was excavated, presenting itself as a thin plaster line, stretching above 40cm then disappearing. Until further excavation, the extent of this unit was unclear, but was later identified via several underlying plaster patches as running to the east wall.

The western portion of this unit-approximately the westernmost 30cm-is very curious, as the infill/bin is very deep and narrow, shaping it like a water trough. In fact, part of the plaster underlying the infill bends over itself, so much so is the extent of the depth and curvature.

Because of its odd shape, as described above in the west, and nearly plateu-like in the east, calling this a bin feels a bit of a stretch; that the present unit is infill of something seems justified though as it comes down on a clearly defined plaster layer.
