Unit 30621
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: make-up layer on platform
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: building; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: This unit was recognized by differences in texture and color. It is a makeup layer that lies upon a bench which runs along the south wall. The basal boundary was not clear. There is a patchy plaster layer that lies beneath with a difficult set of boundaries to identify. The soil was quite varied--from very loose and crumbly on the limit of the unit (likely the result of exposure following Mellaart's excavation) to quite compact. The compact regions may actually be part of a fill. Mellaart may have cut into the building so that the true wall, and edge of the unit, lies beneath the possible fill. Note: following the closure of this unit, we removed the overlying midden and room fill and have reidentified the bench as a platform.
