Unit 30719
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: TPC
Interpretive Categories: Pit fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Discussion: This unit was recognized as a dark, compact semicircular deposit below wall f.3948 (u.30297). It is likely a layer of fill put into pit f.7164 in order to level it for the construction of wall f.3948, as pit f.7167 may have posed a challenge. It contained very few finds, which is consistent with an interpretation of this layer as structural. It was excavated by trowel.
Consistency: compact bits but friable at bottom, immediately above cut [u.30729]
Colour: dark grey, specks of orange
Texture: silty clay loam
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: pieces of mud-brick, very minimal charcoal
Post-depositional Features: animal burrows, digging of robber's trench f.3987, building of wall f.3948, digging of pit f.3986
Basal Boundary: clear-- came down on bright orange mud-brick
