Unit 32616
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Roof collapsed- Primary Room infill
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: Layer exposed after remove the room infill U32606. This layer was distinguish from the layer above basically for the presence of big quantity of collapsed material, big pieces of mostly roof and also oven superstructure, bricks, mortar and plaster mixt with clay. We took samples of all this elements. Was also an important concentration of painted plaster collapses in the central west part of the building. We found also a wood plank related with this red painted plaster collapsed, we took and extra sample for this element (S5) and also for the painted plasters (s7) both of them still have to be studied. We are wondering if this collapsed plaster comes from the W wall of the building or from the roof, in any case seems clear that the building had red painting during one their use phases.
Another interesting thing about that layer, formed as a consequence of the collapsed of the roof and the abandon of the building, was deposit sloping in direction south-north more deep in the north. So that probably means that after the collapsed of the roof and the abandon the building, was start to fill from the south.
On this primary infill layer, we documented a skeleton U32608, that seems to be thrown out from the south of the building, because the body follow the inclination S-N of the layer. We couldn’t define a burial cut for that skeleton, so we think that the body was just thrown out t and was sloping following the inclination of the primary infill, until the body reach the partition wall F8159, were it stops. The skull of that skeleton was clearly abutting the partition wall.

A sample of collapsed painted plaster (S7) was studied in conservation lab. Plaster sequence is composed by a thick single-application layer and a finely layered part. Single-application layer was facing up when found so this seems to be the preparation layer for the layered plaster. The layered part is 18-19 mm thick has c. 29 layers. The uppermost one has been partly exposed by excavators. 2 diverging red painted stripes are visible. Underneath this painted layer, 4 more painted layers are visible in the section of wall plaster. All of them are red painted and discontinuous, the latter suggesting that painted layers in section have geometric patterns as the one exposed.
Consistency: Compact
Colour: Mostly light brown and grey
Texture: Clay and silt
Bedding: Massive and layered, because in different area there are collapse materials ones on the others.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
Finds Material Stored: nothing recorded
