Unit 3345
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: infill
Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.26 x 0.09 x 0.199 m
Discussion: (3345) represents a discrete deposit of soft ashy material that was added between the upper courses of wall [278] and those of [58]. It extended the depth of the upper 5 courses of wall [278] but sat above the lower courses, so seems to have been added to seal the junction of these 2 walls a the top. As the wall [278] slopes considerably towards the West, it may also have fulfilled some supportive function to prevent further slumping.
Recognition: A softer, shier material between wall [58] and [278]
Definition: Defined by material difference and salt encrustations
Execution: trowel and mattock
Condition: dry and crumbly
Consistency: friable
Colour: 2.5 Y 5/3 light olive brown
Texture: ashy silt
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: 5% charcoal (flecks, small and medium sized pieces);, 2% bone (mostly flecks but one larger piece); 2% plaster (flecks and small pieces); <2% tiny pebbles; <2% burnt clay
Post-depositional Features: salt encrustation
Basal Boundary: A sharp, clear basal boundary. (3345) clearly sat above the mortar of [278]. The interface between these was smooth and wavy.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
