Unit 3377
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: moulding layer
Data Category Information: In Situ: non in-situ; Location: feature; Description: moulding; Material: mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 24 x 15 x 8 thick (19 cm on sloping face top to base)
Discussion: White marly (plaster) layer of F.279. Pre-exc. it appeared to run further N, into the "body" of F.279 but excavation showed that 2 white layers were involved, separated in some areas by (3335). The boundary between the two was unclear as they seemed to be bonded it is possible. This was all made in one basic build with different layers still wet when new ones were added.
Recognition: Plaster on S face of F.279. White layer overlying brown in general; spearation from (3300) depends on bedding.
Definition: Superficially on colour difference and simple, in practice, boundary with other white marl deposits difficult/impossible to define clearly.
Execution: Leaf trowel.
Condition: Sheltered.
Consistency: soft/friable to firm, according to exposure
Colour: off-white (no Munsell)
Texture: clay/marl
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: occasional small pebbles of various colours (green, red, black) <1 cm
Post-depositional Features: weathering/repeated cleaning over 2 seasons (or more!)
Basal Boundary: very difficult to distinguish from white marl underlying at base on S skirt and vertical face beneath "hornshaped" brown deposit; still unclear- arbitrary boundary chosen

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
