Unit 3382
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: wall infill
Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: (3882) consists of a layer of mixed clayey material that was deposited behind the length of wall F.278. In places its consistency was very similar to that of the mortar of this wall. Elsewhere, there were patches of softer , ashier material mixed with it. This was not uniform and didn't seem (on excavation) to represent separate episodes of deposition. It was clearly different to the "infilling" at the W end of wall F.278 and that at the N end of F.281, both of which were distinctly softer and ashier and appeared to represent separate deposits, so were given separate unit numbers. (3882) was earlier than (3345) (at the W end of F.278) as it lay behind it. Its relationship to (3349) (to the N of F.281) was less clear as they seemed to run up to each other, so there was no definite stratigraphical relationship between them.
Recognition: A more unmixed, darker material that was different from that of wall F.278.
Definition: Defined by salt encrustation and cracking in places.
Execution: Trowel and pick.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
