Discussion: sample 2 = 1011.86-1011.57
20 cm depth is 1 cm lense of red burned earth in western - seems to correspondto burned layer in floor. 30 cm depth plaster sloping slab 25 cm long against x-section at first I consider this part of pit floor. Then I realise it is in secondary position. Pick it to remove - skull frag stuck to underside, aagh! Is this part of fallen boukranion frag?
40 cm depth - fill in E side is white crumbly clay.
under that is complex grey clay relief slabs. Wedged into sides of pit
3. 08. 99. take out N of x-section after photo + drawing. Only 10 cm N-mostly filled N/ plaster mass vetically wedged into side, skull under. 4. 08. 99. clean more of stuff revealing plaster blubs. Photo before removing one in SE corner (5.6) 18. 08. 99. sample 8 from gleasing at bottom of pit seems to be dark midden round "clay thing"

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

X Finds Material: nothing recorded

Unit description: This unit is mainly made up of the maxillary dentition of a large subadult cow. Two other teeth represent a second cattle and a caprine. There were very few postcranial bones, just the odd rib and long bone shaft fragment. A large proportion of the material was skull fragments of a large mammal that had suffered from modern fragmentation and was probably the rest of the same cattle skull. The material from the 4mm flotation sample #1 was also completely recorded as it was totally different in nature with all the identifiables belonging to sheep/goat; bones from larger mammalian taxa were completely absent. H6 is a bone ring fragment. NR 2003: This was a post retrieval pit that contained a hunk of cattle maxilla initially suspected of being part of a bucranium. Probably not, but possibly one of the items returned to the pit. The rest of the pit, more or less, seems to have been floated, as there are a zillion samples. There are two called sample 5 with separate flot numbers, rather confusingly since both have about the right amount claimed to be taken. For that matter, the sample numbers we have bear very little relation to those listed on the unit sheet. One of the sample 5s might be sample 8 (nope, this was already recorded), and sample 1 (supposed to be the archive sample) might be sample 4. That would leave samples 12 and 13 as simply not listed. We will record them as labelled, keeping the two 5s separate. All of these were >4mm samples, 100% sorted and recorded for diagnostics and flot frags only. Sample 2 is of moderate size, with mostly tiny bits but a few pieces up to ca. 5 cm. it is mostly sheep-size, with a considerable amount of burning (20-30%) and variable surface condition. There are a couple of ratty diagnostics (sheep/goat) and half a ring preform, looking rather kicked around. There is a bit of microfauna and fish. Looks like fill, large pieces filtered out, from multiple sources. Sample 3 is generally similar but a little smaller, and perhaps with somewhat more fresh bone and less burning. The only diagnostics are a quite fresh-looking articulated metatarsal and tarsal. The fresh bits might indicate dirty construction material rather than fill. Sample 5, flot 3274, is quite similar to sample 2, with some gnawed and quite a lot of digested bone. There is a bird bone fragment, but no fish or microfauna. The other sample 5, flot 3441, is smaller but otherwise generally similar. There are no diagnostics and one piece of fish. Digestion is present but less pervasive. Sample 9 is similar to sample 5, part 1. It is notable for having a lot of rib fragments, in particular one 14 cm segment of a young pig-size rib. The rather scrappy diagnostics are all sheep/goat. Sample 11 is much like sample 9, with some pieces of long bone shafts in addition to ribs, and more scrappy sheep/goat diagnostics and a couple of fish bits. It has somewhat more burning, and at higher temperatures. Sample 12 is quite small but otherwise similar. Sample 13 is smaller still and lacks any pieces over 1 cm. Last number = 106
