decided to excavate into niche as most layers stopped at it's entrance although fire insataltion seems to go into it 

Recognition: seen in section left by last years excavation within niche to west of space 117 

Definition: continues into baulk in N, stops at edge of niche in south. Underlies timber

Consistency: friable to compact 

Colour: 10YR 5/2 greyish brown 

Texture: silty clay 

Bedding: layered, uneven strat. 

Inclusions: frequent charcoal frags, large plaster frags. <0.1 m. occ. Flecks <1mm burnt clay/silt, moderate salt flecks
