Unit 5404
Category: Layer dug in 2002
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: building fill,surface
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: remaining brick deposit in front of oven F828 came down to undulating plaster surface/make up. This lips over the floor of the oven and appears to be continuous with the remnant plaster on the outer face of the oven structure and the material dipping down into the hollow below deposit 5398 to the east. In the NW corner of deposit 5404 sits in deeper hollow and comprises layers of plaster and orange brown brick make up. At the base of this is the same charcoal an a grindstone? This may represent a lower oven or a related feature?
5404 postdates the oven as it lips over the top of the base at the entrance. It seems to represent a plastering event though it is rather uneven and recalls 5396 in some respects. Though not a good floor it is more of a surface than that deposit however. Nevertheless it may be possible to correlate 5404 with the sequence 5396-5398 to the east as the latest plastering events in the space
