Unit 5658
Category: Skeleton dug in 2002
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: skeleton
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: The excavation of the deposit was hard because the soil was very firm. It was difficult to excavate while trying to be careful about the skeleton. We came across to some traces (phytolith?) that made us think the body was covered with some kind of mat or was in a a basket. We could not find the cut. The cut was created by digging around the skeleton. The skeleton was removed in three steps. Shahina has done the drawings. After completion of the drawings I have removed the skeleton. Underneath the skeleton lying unit 5771. (5771 unit is wrong SF 18/04/11)
Burial F.1117 was located towards the SE corner of the building. The skeleton (5658) was that of a young adult male aged between 20 – 30 years. It was found on its back, twisted at the pelvis such that its legs folded over on top of its chest, with the knees at the right shoulder, arms trapped between the torso and legs, hands close to the head which lay on its side, slightly turned up and away from the body. A concentration of phytoliths were traced along the right rib cage suggesting that the body may have been wrapped in a woven mat that held it in place and could also account for the rather awkward position.
