Unit 10369
Category: Layer dug in 2005
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Midden
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded
Dimensions: 2.5 m E-W by 2.75 m N-S
Discussion: Multiple deposition ashy lenses and thin layers of midden close to the surface and close to edge of excavation, therefore, high contamination. Cut on all sides by Hellenistic (?) foundation-trench (with edge of excavation to the west). Survives with 10-15 cm depth of building fill. Decision taken t remove all as one. Consists of ashy lenses, mixed debris, soft basal boundary is irregular and diffuse with underlying deposits. Riddled with animal holes. Very rich in animal bone and charcoal. Discrete pure ash lenses but no sign of in-situ burning. Bones are more concentrated at interface of basal boundary. Quite rooty as is close to the surface.
Recognition: Surface was black and ashy. Bottom of deposit could be seen on 3 vertical boundaries defined by Byzantine (?) trench.
Definition: Three sides were defined by late intrusion, fourth (arbitrary) edge by the edge of excavation. Bottom of deposit was clear on vertical surface
Execution: Hoe and shovel, fully dry sieve
Condition: cool and windy
Consistency: loose
Colour: very dark grey
Texture: clayey-silt
Bedding: layered - all similar thin ashy deposits visible in vertical section
Inclusions: 1. 5/10% small-large animal bone, 2. 2% beads, 3. 2% obsidian, 4. 2% pottery, 5. 2% flecks of clay
Post-depositional Features: 1. animal burrows, 2. insect nest (ants), 3. salt deposits
Basal Boundary: difuse, promient, smooth, with irregular sloping
