Discussion: We excavated this beige, compact upper layer in order to further descend and expose the "new" wall on the N side of this unit (visible initially as a stucco line on the surface) and the mudbrick wall on the S side of this unit. Multiple fragments of bone and obsidian were recovered from this level, in addition to some chalky nodules and a clay ball fragment. There was one feature noted on the S side of the unit -- a conglomeration of odd stones and colored clay inclusions, which in the previous level had been obscured by mudbrick fall. We halted excavation of the unit on the NW corner, due to the depth of the midden (?) ash, which had been noted at the previous level as an "ashy stain." This material is very dark, very loose, and very ashy, with inclusions of mudbrick (burned) in the upper levels. This area was named space 240, to differentiate its walled interior from the "street" space 232. 

Recognition: Descended onto this natural layer via unit 11013 on the west, and 11014 on the east - arbitrary layers 

Definition: Bordered by pit feature 1751 on N side, grid line on E side, mudbrick wall on S side and unexcavated portion on W side. 

Execution: Mattock, hoe, shovel and trowel to remove and clear matrix. Brush for features. 

Condition: Dry, windy - soil is damp at lower level portion in a minor way 

Consistency: Firm to strong/compact, with pockets of friable (burrows, ash and midden feature) 

Colour: Light beige, greyish 

Texture: Silty clay loam 

Bedding: Primarily massive, with some mottling of inclusions with more clay. 

Inclusions: Obsidian, bone, clay ball fragment, worked stone, mudbrick, burnt clay 

Post-depositional Features: Some bioturbation due to animal burrows and root systems 

Basal Boundary: Gradual transition to a smooth base of slightly darker soil with high salt inclusions (visible flecks)
