Unit 11102
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: erosion deposits,infill
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: This layer initially began to be excavated as a possible pit fill located by the West wall defined by a plaster lining and fill that consists mostly of clay aggregated. We started investigating this Thursday morning and by noon I decided to include the rest of the buildings infill to this unit because it was becomng difficult ot define a pit, and thoroughly differentiate its infill with the surrounding matrix. We scraped the whole room and left at a level where features have begun to appear. The plaster on the West wall extends lower below, however it dissappears about 60cm before it reaches the South wall. Here we came upon a lined feature that may be a post base or a basin. In the SE corner, there is extensive burrowing and as we cleaned the area we came upon a part of a wall lined with plaster. This only extends about 40-cm to the North. In the northern part of the room we have not defined much except for in the NE corner where there is a clear line dividing deposits. I believe this layer is a mix of deposits ranging from infill to perhaps some deposits associated with features. However, it was all excavated as one unit because of fast tracking, and extensive erosion as we are only about 40-50cm below surface. After 11102 we realized we needed to define the walls as clearly as possible, and started following plastered wall surfaces on the West and South and North walls. We soon came to realize that the upper courses of mud brick and mortar seen above the plastered surface may be related to either a later phase, or a later building in the same area as these deposits were clearly laying on top.
Depth and volume estimated in PX. Unclear how much of this unit (if any) was dry sieved (DE 2009)
Recognition: firm bricky clay layer associated with paster chunks, that further extended as excavated
Definition: defined by walls to north, west and south
Execution: trowel, brush
Condition: hot and dry
Consistency: firm to rigid
Colour: Orangish brown to greyish brown
Texture: clayey loam to silty clay loam
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: this layer produced very little bone, obsidian and pottery (1 sherd). It was a mixed deposit that had similar inclusions to 11100; see for description
Post-depositional Features: burrows, root holes
Basal Boundary: diffuse and irregular anthropopenic boundary

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
