Unit 11488
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: layer to block hole when room blocked off, plaster packing/moulding
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: post; Material: mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Description: partially excavated layer
Discussion: Layer was running rouind front and back of pillaster as seen before execution of 11484, afterwards it appeared as a single block of white mortar construction material. Hard to say which came first, and whether pillaster has just twisted out of shape -
On execution realised plaster layer continued under material (not floor layers?) out to the East - means that pillaster appeared, then plaster put down, then this other grey material on top of that - is definitely not part of the floor layers, clearly visible furhter to the south; Maybe this is an infill of some sort put in when the other room was blocked up??
Still hard to say whether plaster moulding was primary, then incorporated into a pillaster or if pillaster first and plaster round it and then twisted: had initially believe this packing was moulding joining post hole F.1322 and pilaster F.1309 - but can't be as it continues. On balance seems more likely that plaster incorporated to pillaster makeup when east room sealed off.
Volume roughly calculated. EGW 21 July 2009
Recognition: clear, by colour
Definition: clear
Execution: trowel
Condition: dry
Consistency: SOFT, CRUMBLY, slightly lumpy
Colour: white - offwhite
Texture: silt
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: 1 burnt stone
Post-depositional Features: animal burrow through base of deposit, possible distortion as building slumped south? Pillaster nearby is twisted and cracked, this moulding was attached to it/sandwiched inbetween pillster and post setting in bench (F.1322)
Basal Boundary: clear, distinct, smooth. During excavation realised apparent boundary to wall not the boundary, and that layer continued

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
