Unit 11642

Category: layer    dug in 2005

Area: South

Interpretive Categories: rubbly infill

Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: raised area (platform); Material: re-used superstructure; Deposition: heterogeneous

Discussion: layer is very unequally deposited - revealing how the platform was constructed - earth was piled against brick wall, then a retaining wall built, and earth piled behind to make it level. Layer was very hard and compact, making it difficult to recover some of the bones in one piece. 116743 sectioned off as a separate cluster, in hindsight this was unnecessary, deposit is one homogeneous deposit, layers blurred into room fill towards platform edge. Layer also continued in a thin layer onto F.1332. This was discovered durnig excavation. Blended into room infill at an indistinct boundary - may have been material from the same source used in both places
