Unit description: This unit was a cluster for a single cattle mandible, X1, which was lying on top of the lentil bin in House 1. It is a strikingly large piece for House 1, being nearly complete, hence perhaps deliberately placed. Moreover, it is unusual to find a large mammal jaw so complete anywhere on site. It was in a layer of burnt fill, and is burnt itself, possibly in the house fire. Was this another piece holding down a cover over the lentils, like the goat horns? Or is the relation to the lentil bin accidental? Only a few roots remain of the teeth, which may have broken off when it burned and gone with the surrounding unit (no bone has reached us from this unit, 1196). If they were lost earlier, it suggests the mandible was kept around for a while before deposition. There is no indication of tool use. 10 grams (ca. 14 fragments) of mandible (with no glue) removed for C14, 15/8/01. LM
