Unit 11979
Category: Skeleton dug in 2005
Area: North
Data Category Information: none
Dimensions: 0.15 N/S x 0.18 E/W
Discussion: This partial neolithic neonate was the southern burial in a series of 4 neonatal burials found in a N/S line in Space 264. (Sk 11957, 11971, 11972, and 11979.) While a burial cut was not distinct for the other three burials, the base of the skeleton suggested a specific cut for Sk 11979. This cut was not clear at upper levels but became more evident upon removal of the skeleton. Because the burial cut and fill were unclear when excavation of the skeleton occurred the burial fill was not separated from the other 3 neonatal burials to the north.
Sk 11979 was the most disturbed of the 4 neonatal burials. It is unclear of if these 4 individuals died at the same time although this is a possibility. However, it is likely that 11979 was separated from the other 3 given its distinct basal burial cut and its level of disturbance.
X and Y of Targets: Target A - X: 1046.96; Target A - Y: 1151.75; Target B - X: 1047.33; Target B - Y: 1152.74; Target C - X: 0; Target C - Y: 0; Target D - X: 0; Target D - Y: 0
Body: Neolithic neonate, partial. On stomach, probably in a flexed position
Head: Indeterminate; partial cranial bones only
Right Arm: Upper arm extended alongside body; bent at elbow ~ 90 degrees; lower arm extended to right side
Left Arm: Missing
Right Leg: Missing
Left Leg: Femur and tibia possibly flexed at hip, located near head; displaced at least partially.
Other comments: Lower vertebrae, position of ilia and ischia and the locatum of the head and right arm suggest a ventrally placed skeleton.
