Unit 12310
Category: Layer dug in 2005
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: fill of post retrieval pit
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: Fill of post retrieval pit. The fill is higher than the floor level and was therefore cut after the room fill had started to fill in the space. The cut was not identified however until the floor layer had been reached.
The upper fil contained charcoal frags perhaps from parts of the post burnt higher up. The post retrieval pit had then been backfilled.
For the sample I took 20li from the top of the deposit to get the charcoal and 10li from near the base.
Recognition: clayey deposit surrounded at east and west by plaster from wall lipping around the deposit
Definition: clayey fill
Execution: trowl
Condition: cool
Consistency: compact
Colour: mid brown
Texture: silty clay
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: very occasional bone; in upper fill large (20-30mm) charcoal frags
Post-depositional Features: animal burrow
Basal Boundary: flatish, difficult to see because of deep pit but changes to a lighter sandier deposit
