Unit 12500

Category: Layer    dug in 2006

Area: South

Interpretive Categories: midden

Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded

Discussion: Distinct from 11397 after cleaning on the basis of consistnecy as 11397 is relatively softer than 12500 which may be due to differing soil types?
Together layers 11397 and 12500 suggest that space 261 was used as open ground during the life of building 53. 12500 is definitely not primary midden and it may be secondary re-deposited midden used to level up the space or even enrichen it. The firmness of layers 12500 and 11397 may suggest that this space was a utilitarian space that was frequently trampled underfoot.
12500 contains many lenses of soil

Recognition: Soil like layer with charcoal flecks/ fragments

Definition: Below 11397 which was relatively softer and above a clearly distinct charcoal layer, which hasn’t been given a number yet.

Colour: Appears grey when dry and dark brown when wet

Texture: silty clay loam

Bedding: Frequent charcoal flecks and fragments- very occasional brick fragments
