Unit 11397
Category: Layer dug in 2006
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: midden
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded
Description: Midden deposit below (11379) not excavated in 2005 season - subsequently excavated by PAC in 2006
Discussion: A thin cleaning spit was removed on Saturday 24th June upon which the upper part of space 261 resolved itself into two distinct layers based on the consistency of layers. Layer 11397 which was attributed in CH05 appeared to be a softer layer lying to the west of a firmer later -12500 - attributed in 2006.
Together layers 11397 and 12500 appear to suggest that space 261 was used as open ground during the life of building 53. Neither 11397 or 12500 are primary midden and they may be re-deposited midden. The firmness of layers 11397 and 12500 may suggest that this space was a utilitarian space that was frequently trampled underfoot. A space for multiple uses.
11397 contained many lenses of soil.
Recognition: Soil like layer with charcoal flecks/ fragments
Definition: Below 11379 which has already been removed. Softer than 12500 which is stratigraphically below it and contrasts greatly with the burnt mud-brick rubble that is physically below it in places
Execution: mattock and trowel
Condition: dry
Consistency: Firm
Colour: Appears grey when dry and dark brown when wet
Texture: silt loam
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: Frequent charcoal flecks and fragments, occasional brick and very occasional plaster fragments
Post-depositional Features: Animal disturbance - truncated by South shelter foundations
Basal Boundary: Clear when directly above burnt brick rubble, horizon less clear with 12500 but still apparent on a consistency basis
