Data Category Information: Location: in abandoned building; Deposition: finely bedded

 

Dimensions: 6m x 2.5m x up to .28m thick 

 

Discussion: Layer of midden overlying possible lime-burning horizon - dark band (dark brown/black) horizon of burning visible at base of unit. One small patch of lime and burnt horizon orverlying the basal lime/burning horizon. Removed this as part of (13139), overlying the lime burning deposits below, and also towards the SW corner. 

 

Recognition: Thick layer visible in section above dark band of burning - also clearly visible in plan -defined by burnt horizon 

Definition: Clear except for south end 

Execution: Mattock 

Condition: Dry 

Consistency: Loose and friable 

Colour: Pale brown / dark grey / mid grey / dark brown but mid brownsh grey predominates 

Texture: Ashy - sandy silt 

Bedding: Compound - largely massive but some horizons / lenses visible 

Inclusions: Moderate small - medium bone fragments; occasional pot; occasional obsidian 

Post-depositional Features: Truncated by Byzantine foundation trench to east 

Basal Boundary: Abrupt, distinct, smooth - large shallow bowl shape
