Description: Topsoil of trench 5, formerly called 13700 and the renamed 

 

Discussion: Loose topsoil removed by mattock to hard surface a layer features in NW for investigation and description later.
Orange patches visible: possibly clay bricks with litle structual pattern principally along North side.
On SE corner 1.5m x 0.5 m irregular but broadly rectangular feature of dark ashy lenses. 

 

Recognition: Removal of loose topsoil necessary 

Definition: Clear 

Execution: Hoes, mattocks 

Condition: Dry, hot 

Consistency: Loose with many roots and burrows 

Colour: Ligth brown 

Texture: Silty soil, loam, some sand 

Bedding: Homogeneous 

Inclusions: Artfacts, vegetation 

Post-depositional Features: Animal burrows, erosion 

Basal Boundary: Yes- Hard, pocked lighter surface (13702)
