Dimensions: 10m EW x 5m NS, 0.15m deep 

 

Discussion: After removal of the loose topsoil (13701) we dug down into the underlying hard grey horizon until we encountered yellow patches, loose soil in spots. After that we cleaned and photographed the surface which is not yet a good planum as the students still have to practise and to develop the necessary muscles. 

 

Recognition: hard light grey horizon beneath topsoil (13701) 

Definition: upper limit clear, lower limit abritrary 

Execution: hoes, mattocks 

Condition: windy, hot 

Consistency: hard, patches of loose soil, many roots and mole holes 

Colour: light grey 

Texture: silty loam, some sand 

Bedding: massive, patches of loose soil 

Inclusions: roots, artefacts
