Unit 1456
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: floor,floors
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: raised area (platform); Material: white clay; Deposition: multiple
Dimensions: 1.9m n-s, 1.2m w-e
Discussion: Floors in space 110 - stopped at major points packing (i.e. at the bone of the micromorphology block sample <2> (1454) and where what floors slope upwards to the step at the west (see sketch). Main question about their floors and (1454) is whether they have truncated on the step or they just lip up to it.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: There is no dry sieve material from here (floors in space 110, North), but four flotation samples, only two of which (S3, S7, S8 have bone in). Sample 7 has 1 large proximal radius, rather poorly preserved, partly burnt, and quite polished from trample (probably). Otherwise only a few small fragments, and a bit of eggshell (pulled, not recorded). Sample 8 has a fragment of a large mammal first phalanx, and a small indeterminate scrap. Both are burnt. S3 has a very small amount of bone, with only one diagnostic - a small carnivore distal radius. The rest is mainly sheep sized scrap (longbone, rib) and some cattle sized scrap (long bone and indeterminate). Most is highly fragmented - <2cm, and although surfaces are not highly weathered, edges seem rolled/battered. 20% of the bone is burnt, mostly browny-black, but with some calcined. Seems fairly typical floor debris. Sample 6 >4mm flotation 50% sorted (?), recorded completely. Smallish sample, with fair amount of small crumbles, mostly sheep-size but a good proportion of large mammal. About one-third are burnt, mostly low but some high temperature. Some pieces up to 2 cm or so, especially considering the many modern breaks. A rather weathered human phalanx. Most of the rest of the bone is quite fresh, with a little digestion. Not really classic floor, more like a bit of relatively untumbled fill. 4 pieces of med and large size scrap mammal bone removed for C14 to UK 15/8/01 LM.
