Unit 1459
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: floors
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: raised area (platform); Material: white clay; Deposition: composite (floor/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation); Basal Spit: painted
Dimensions: c.2.1m n-s, 1.5m w-e
Discussion: Floors in space 110; comes down onto 'orange sandy' packing. At south end on slope, the surface is red-painted, but also seriously disturbed and partially slumped. There is much going on in this small southern strip that needs working out. Questions: 1) Why no red paint on the north side? Unfortunately grave pits cut the slops so we don't know how far it extended. 2) The earliest grave cut underlies their floors, how does it relate to the use of the building.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: No dry sieved bone, so 4 mm flotation samples (S3, S6) sorted and recorded completely. Moderate amount in S3, including lots of microfauna. Mostly quite small pieces of sheep-size animals. Some burning. S6 has small amount, with mostly sheep sized Scrap (long bone, rib, vertebra) with diagnostics being a sheep/goat ulna frag, a calcaneum frag and a phalanx. There is also a cattle third phalanx fragment and a human tarsal (?). Some fragments are small, but one or two larger (5cm). Some low temperature burning. The scrap looks a bit battered, although weathering not high. A single piece is possibly digeted, but no gnawing. This small fraction looks like floor debris, but diagnostic parts of the assemblage are perhaps too large and good condition to be typical of floors. Small amount of microfauna - removed. 8 frags of sheep sized scrap removed for C14 to UK, 15/8/01. LM Last number = F36.Figurine Records: No Ground Stone Records: Yes
