Unit 1505
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: midden
Data Category Information: Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick&mortar; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: Contains cluster 1057 (see plan 96/124). On 18/8/96 1505 was restricted to a slot 1m wide just North of 975N, so 1507 needs renumbering! (Note that some material around1507 was removed as 1505 before the section was established. This was done when it was realised that the layers dipped significantly from East to West and a good deal of stratigraphy was being removed on the West side of space 106.
Execution: trowel
Consistency: firm, patchily loose and weak
Colour: general matrix, 10YR 4/2-4/3 (see inclusons for other colours)

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Unit 1505 produced a moderately large amount of faunal material. The bone from the dry sieve was dominated by fragments of long bone and rib from both 03 and 07 sized animals. This portion of the material exhibited high predepositional fragmentation and appears to be the result of relatively extensive processing of the bone. However, a number of phalanges, amongst other elements, from cattle, horse and caprines were preserved intact and appear to have escaped the fracturing for marrow. Further evidence for the deposition of animal remains that have not been processed to any great extent, are articulated bones. These include two groups of carpals, one from equid and one from a caprine. Additionally there was a group of horse tarsals and metatarsal held in their original position by mineralised sediment. The tarsals in this group were also pathological and had extra deposits of bone around the exterior surfaces. Sheep, cattle and equids are all well represented suggesting that the dump was an accumulation from a number of different deposition events. Equid bones are very common compared to other units and both small-medium equids and Equus caballus are present. Also there was a metacarpal of infantile horse and a phalanx 2 in the process of fusing showing that not just adult equids were hunted. A portion of the material seems to consist of highly processed carcasses, whilst other events involved the dumping of articulated portions of animals. Weathering is minimal indicating that the dump accumulated relatively fast. Burnt bone is very low and where present had only been heated to low temperatues. Digested bone is present but not in very high levels and gnawed bone is very rare. A variety of body parts are present and there is no obvious bias towards any part of the body. One noticeable difference to many contexts is the high frequency of cutmarks on ribs of sheep sized animals. A rib of a young (possibly infantile) rib was also cut. Two pieces of worked bone and a bird carpometacarpus were also found in the sample. 4mm flotation samples 1, 3 and 5, 100% sorted, were recorded for diagnostics only. These show a generallty similar picture as the material from the dry sieve with fragmented cattle and caprine bones. There are some differences between the samples indicating some variation within the deposit. in sample #1 equid and caprine bones are well represenrted. This sample also contained part of a probably articulated fox paw consisting of a metatpodial, first, second and a third phalanx. Sample #2 contained parts of large cattle and some caprine elements, along with one piece from a medium bird. Only a small proportion of sample 5 was identifiable to element level and included some fish and microfauna along with a mixture of pig, caprine, cattle and equid.
