Unit 1525
Category: Cluster dug in 1996
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: red floor
Data Category Information: Location: floors; Material: ochre; Deposition: primary deposition
Discussion: Description: a patchy lens of red ochre dust covering approximate area of 0.51 x 0.46 m !! /a thickness cannot be determined as the spread is a fine dusting with small patches of more concentrated depth but still a matter of millimetres.
Covers an irregular area with irregular edges where the dust fades. A small patch of white plaster overlies it to the south which might be remnants of an overlying floor?
The are covered and density suggests the ochre to be dusting as opposed to applied paint, ie a wet application, but whether it is deliberate or accidental spillage is the debate.
Discussion:
Red ochre dust - spillage or deliberate? Wendy says Mellaart noted a 'ritual' deposition or application before renovation of a house. Alternatively, someone may have tripped over the threshold step!
Execution: leaf trowel + brush
Condition: covered during previous rain storms but generally damp. Day is hot and dry
