Unit 1563
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: midden
Data Category Information: Location: in abandoned building; Deposition: coarsely bedded (dumps)
Discussion: Dumped within "midden", or probably a whole series of dumpings of similar material. As with other midden deposits, sloping off to the south-west from the north-east, suggesting dumping in this direction. Material at its thickest at its centre and towards its lowest extent, suggesting a spreading or movement of the heavier material to fill this space.(see sketch) Very similar to 1567 below, although peels off very nicely except at south-west extent where it again may be pressed into the soil below. Dry Sieve Information: Probably some dry sieve but amount unknown
Execution: trowel, pick
Condition: dry
Consistency: moderately firm when moist, weak when very dry
Colour: 2.5Y 5/3 light olive grey
Texture: sandy clay silt
Bedding: compound layered, dumps throughout.
Inclusions: charcoal (<2%), bone, obsidian, clay balls, stones, plaster, burnt clay, phytoliths, shell
Post-depositional Features: Very compact to North and much more mixed. (As with other midden deposits in this area) Has it been walked on in the past when its surface was exposed?
Basal Boundary: dumped, distinct wavey

Unit description: X1 is a bone point. A medium size unit made up of D.S with large chunks of cattle and sheep size fragments. The most recordable bones belong to horse, which include a scapula, calcaneus, astragalus and phalanx which most likely belong to the same animal. A small amount of burning and a small amount of gnawing was present. There was no evidence of digestion. Overall the unit is fairly processed with lots of rib fragments and small long bone shaft fragments. Sheep size fragments include vertebrae, pelvis fragments and loose teeth. Recorded items were sub-bagged within the unit.Figurine Records: No GroundStone Records: No Heavy Residue Records: No Microfaunal Records: No
