Description: Trench 9 

Discussion: The layer (15666) revealed an oven wall (15481) showing that the fill is indeed a building and thus roomfill. The layer (15666) was firm, but not as firm as the previous layers (15496, 15478, 15469). There were lots of burnt bits and ash mixed throughout this layer 

Recognition: fill layer, darker and ashier than layer above 

Definition: fair 

Execution: mattock, towel, hoe 

Condition: hot and sunny 

Consistency: firm 

Colour: dark reddish brown with lots of black ashy patches 

Texture: silty clay 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: frequent animal bone; occasional clay balls, stone; very occasional obsidian, human bone 

Post-depositional Features: animal burrows and plant action 

Basal Boundary: --- don’t reach basal boundary because it is below the foundation level of the Trench
