Unit 1640
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: floor surface,floors
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: white clay; Deposition: single
Description: Floor surface (s) by E wall, space 113
Remains of floors truncated by Mellaart. Patchy surfaces of creamy plaster, steep slope at lowest level. Upper surfaces (which were removed) were more level.
Surface worn out in places, with greyish make-up layer showing through.
Discussion: We aimed for the lowest floor surface, taking it all off in one. However, it now appears that there may have been some features in these floors at the N end - in the lowest level a possible plaster-lined semi-circular (possibly circular beyond section) shallow depression & above it at a later date a smaller plaster basin which shows well in section. Due to our decision to take al the floors out as one (scant remnants left by Mellaart) & to the patchy nature of the plaster surface, it is not possible to say exactly what form this surface took. However, beyond the section we could excavate more carefully in the future.
