Discussion: Unit 16947 is the surface under roomfill u. 16942 in sp. 449. It is characterized by a firm consistency, patchy yellowish color and some inclusions of charcoal. The surface is superimposed by a rather crumbly roomfill, that is easily removeable, making it in wide parts of the space, easy to find the surface. The surface is not perfectly flat, but sloping downwards from f. 3326 to the cenetr, in front of f. 3324 it is quite flat, from the center of the space to f. 3333 it gets quite bumpy. In the center of the unit and especially in front of f. 5057 the surface is heavily disturbed by animal burrows, making it sometimes hard to follow it. It is important to notice to notice that we are dealing with a surface and not a floor! This unit is a trampled compacted roomfill (notice the yellowish patchy color) where finds are lying flatly on it. Thanks to animal burrows it became clear that under this surface a new layer of roomfill is waiting. Unfortunately, the surface isn't defined clearly in all corners and it doesn't look exactly the same in all parts of sp. 449. From f. 3326 to the center of space 449, the surface is slopong, but very flat. In front f. 3324 doesn't have a patchy, yellowish color, but yellow color without any other patches of color, and it consists of firm clay, whereas in the rest of the space it looks more trampled and mixed in composition. In front of f. 3333 the surface is rather bumpy, not quite as firm as in front of f. 3326, and it looks also slightly different when freshly excavated, it seems to be more grayish yellowish there. About the surface in front of f. 5057 I'm not sure at all. It has some pottery sherds lying flatly on it, being my main indicator that there the surface continues, but from the surface itself it is hard to tell where the fill 16942 ends and the surface starts, as the fill above the surface is extremely compacted and contains chunks of very firm plaster and clay. Some clayballs are lying directly on the surface. Another problem of exposing the surface is that the patchy yellowish color that is so characteristic for it vanishes soon after being exposed, and the surface looks grayish or brownish like the superimposing fill and brushing, even in dried out condition, blurs the colors even more.
