Unit 18680
Category: Layer dug in 2011
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: floor
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: mix (dark grey&white); Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation); Basal Spit: unpainted
Dimensions: E-W 2.35 m; N-S 1.30 m
Discussion: Floor across SE corner of building 97, bounded by walls f.3087 and f.4089 to the south, f.4088 to the east, f.3456 to the north, and f. 3460 to the west. The layer is most compact and clear to the west and north, descending into a more moist and friable area in the southeast corner gradually, without a sharp break between the dry and compact area and the looser, wetter sections. The floor is broken by the evidence for the ladder scar (f.3523), and is scorched in the northwest corner by the burning from hearth f.3517. Removing this layer revealed some moulding along the western edge of this layer extending E-W which bounds a region of significant ash and charcoal found in the SW corner of this layer which may represent a hearth, molded into the floor, similar to f.3524.
Recognition: Compact clay layer underlying floor (18679) with hearth molding
Definition: clear-- although I tbecomes softer, moister, and more friable in the SE corner
Execution: trowel, brush
Condition: humid and hot
Consistency: firm along W edge, increasingly friable toward SE corner
Colour: mottled gray and yellow-brown
Texture: silty clay loam
Bedding: composite
Inclusions: ash, charcoal, occasional bone and pottery
Post-depositional Features: extensive cracking, animal burrows
Basal Boundary: clear- yellow-brown silty clay floor layer, obvious color and texture change
