Dimensions: 2.39 m E-W x 1.33 m N-S 

 

Discussion: This layer, distinguished by its clear yellow-brown color, is a surface layer in the southeast portion of this space. It is molded to form the shape for hearth F.3525 and disappears in the southeast corner which has consistently had extremely friable moist silty clay loam, and is marked by truncated plaster extension (18665) and the overhang of wall F.4057. This surface layer (18696) extenuates toward the north and west of these constructions ending at the bench F. 3456. 

 

Recognition: color/texture change: underlying (18680), a mottled gray surface silty clay surface layer 

Definition: clear due to recognizable yellow color 

Execution: trowel 

Condition: very hot 

Consistency: friable to firm 

Colour: yellow-brown 

Texture: silty clay 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: some charcoal, some ash, obsidian 

Post-depositional Features: use of hearth (F. 3525) ladder scar, animal burrows, cracking 

Basal Boundary: clear, colour change to gray-brown clay loam
