Unit 18994
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: homogenous abandonment fill of house
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: This unit was one of the uppermost remaining units from the 2010 season and overlaid the house floor (u.18981) to the west of the hearth within house 80. It was tentativley identified as a thick (10cm) homogenous house fill consisting of a fine light brown and grey matrix with varied inclusions. This interpretation was based on the exposed southern section of the unit. Therefore, removal of this unit was neccessary in order to proceed with the excavation of the house proper. The homogenity of this unit, its context as an adandonment layer and its restricting effect on the wider goals of the excavation neccessitated its rigourous and efficient removal with a trowel and hand mattock starting with its northernmost extent. As the material was removed regular cleaning was undertaken which revealed an eroded plaster surface abutting the building's west wall. This plaster surface (u.18997) was found at a depth of approx. 5cm through unit 18994. Another discrete patch of plaster surface was encountered towards the southern extent of this unit again abutting the buildings western wall and also the southern edge of feature 3431. The southernmost extent of this context was badly burnt resulting in a darker colour and finer texture.
