Unit 19019
Category: Layer dug in 2010
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: make up for surface
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: The layer removed was very similar to the one below, making it difficult in places to define where one ended and the next began. Layers applied over one another but in places do not always overlap due to patchy application of repaits. Layers removed have been red make up layer, in an attempt to work down to a clean, well defined layer that will connect up with other features in the building.
Recognition: Colour/texture
Definition: by limits of unit/layer
Execution: trowel, leaf trowel
Condition: hot
Consistency: firm/friable
Colour: dark red-brown
Texture: clay
Bedding: layered, patchy and uneven
Inclusions: none
Post-depositional Features: a few small animal burrows
Basal Boundary: abrupt, with faint change in material between layers, base layer not consistently applied across featyre, has patches probably from repeated hearth floor repair towards end of use.
