Data Category Information: Description: burial

Dimensions: 0.50 m long, 0.25m wide, 0.20 m deep (max)

Discussion: Cut of a small grave pit, used for the inhumation of burial (s) 42a + 42b. Though bones are disarticulated, the regular nature of the cut and the relatively careful linear 'bundling' of the bones suggests a deliberate act of internment rather than the digging of a random hole to dispose of bones exposed during other digging / remodelling activities within the building.
The Western edge of the cut truncates deposit [1488], a plaster floor that probably represents the first phase of the building. Later plaster floors had possibly begun to slump into the fill of cut [1958]. However, I did not excavate any of these, and am consequently not certain of this stratigraphic relationship. [1958] may well be cut from a higher level

Execution: trowel, hand shovel

Condition: dry, warm

Shape: roughly subrectangular, though the noth-western corner is not on an angle (almost rhomboidal)

Sides: sides=smooth, steep and regular. The northern sides drops at approx. 2 ini (60degrees) but the eastern and western edges= almost vertical. The eastern edge is even very slightly undercut.

Base Break: these= relatively gentle + concave.

Base: the base is gently concave, and subrectangular in plan. Slopes gently to the east.

Orientation: orientation= markedly e-w

All Layers within:unit 1956 (deposit) + burials 42 A + 42 B = within this cut.
