Dimensions: .34 m EW x .42 m NS x .02 m 

 

Discussion: This layer consists of extremely dark ash deposited in a semicircular shape largely under the overhang of wall f.4089. It represents the fill of the roughly sixth hearth found in this space (the sequence of hearths becomes blurred by the recent identification of the built edge shown in the sketch. The fill is located near the ladder scar, a common relationship in houses here.

The layer of ash extenuated under some plaster in the western corner, likely deposited as part of the upkeep of the built edge shown in the sketch above. The plaster was removed as part of this context. The full extent of this layer could not be excavated due to the conservation state of wall f.4089. 

 

Recognition: easily distinguishable ash found under (19610) 

Definition: defined semicircle of ash-- although it extenuated under some plaster removed as part of this context. 

Execution: trowel and brush 

Condition: cool 

Consistency: friable to loose 

Colour: dark brown to black 

Texture: ashy silty clay 

Bedding: layered 

Inclusions: charcoal (occasional) 

Post-depositional Features:

Basal Boundary: clear-- change to dark grey silty clay
