Unit 1994
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: lowest floor
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: raised area (platform); Material: white clay; Deposition: multiple
Discussion: Lowest floors on platform F.37 - very thin, only one or two layers thick at most. (GML)
Against S wall the plaster dipped sharply into a runnel which wall filled with mixed soil/charcoal/burnt brick etc. which was later plastered over for the upper floors creating a bump of "rubbish" against the wall and below the floor. There are two possible straightforward explanations; 1) the wall subsided, pushing down the floor and this was renovated with a raised floor to cope with further subsidence. 2) there was a step against the wall as there seems to be against the N wall of the NW platform. Why this should happen is not obvious, so I tend to go for the subsidence story. Hopefully once the walls are removed we shall know more. This material was all taken out as one and dry sieved.
