Description: GRAVE CUT - may not be a single cut

Discussion: This may be a composite rather than genuine cut. The S end was removed as (1988), the W/N edges were defined in 1996 season for variations burials, the E edge was recognised & cleared for the excavation of skeleton (2115), whose foot/ leg ran into the deposit left after the definition of earlier cuts, especially [2116] in which was skeleton (1995) .(1988) had no skeleton in it , only a few bone scraps, may therefore be part of [2117] or may be a later cut for a skeleton disturbed/removed by later burials such as 2115/1995 ( the S edge of which did not seem to go close enough) or those excavated in 1996. At the base, skeletons 2115& 2119 look like a double burial but were in separate scoops, which may both belong to cut 2117- which I think they do- or control conceivably belong to separate cuts, that for 2119 having disappeared by now.

GML 17.9.97
These two cuts have now been separate as doubt exists over their contemporaneity - if they were a real double burial, why have two scoops, instead of one. All the other double burials on site only have one

Execution: trowel, leaf

Condition: Hot, cool, windy

Shape: irregular cut

Sides: Fairly vertical in upper part in most areas

Base Break: Gradual ; difficult to follow due to disturbance/overcutting for removal of skeletons.

Base: Two ovals scoops with raised ridge separating them running W-E . This ridge seems to slope gradually to N &S. Bases of scoops probbly flat, but disturbed for removal of skeletons.

Orientation: Probably N-S, tho' base scoops are W/E
