Unit 20050
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Eroded remnant hearth surface
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: baked; Deposition: multiple
Description: Layer is a very degraded, loose burnt sandy clay deposit of hearth surfaces, located below friable surface u.20048 and loose burned floor levels u. 20046 in the center of the hearth.
Discussion: Layer was partially identified during excavation of u.20046 while attempting to chase u.20048 the entire length of the hearth. It appears as though u.20046 and u.20048 both cover u.20050, even though u.20050 is only below u.20048 near the edges of the hearth. This may be because u.20048 was dug out in antiquity in the middle and then more floors were laid over the area. This layer appears to be a mixture of burned material and heavily eroded laminated hearth surfaces. Ths mixed and loose nature of this material may reflect extensive activity such as digging out and remodeling of the hearth.
