Unit 20091

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: moulding; Material: brick&mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Description: Layer is friable thin orange clay mortar to foundation of wall ext F. 5038.
Discussion: Layer represents a new unit because of the differences between the mortar of the original wall extension to F. 5038, U. 20062. The original mortar (the mortar of the extension on top of U. 20091) was looser and very gray and sandy while the new unit is friable, smoother in texture, orange, and composed of fine silty clay. The mortar surrounds three mudbricks (U. 20092). The mortar could represent part of a special foundation or preparation layer of the wall extension especially considering the placement of the groundstone (x1) with possible red pigment right on top of the mortar. Also since the mortar and associated bricks are built on top of the threshold, it is also possible the foundation feature serves a function or ritual purpose to protect or seal the part of the threshold later covered by the wall extension.
