Discussion: Unit 20141 is the arbitrary first surface layer opened over the extent of Trench 3. The soil is quite dry, with a relatively large quantity of finds. We excavated this quickly, with hoes and shovels, opting not to dry-sieve the contents. We began with a 5 cm-deep pass across the trench. This pass revealed some thin patches of burnt soil, but no distinct features, so we decided to continue with a second pass of about equal depth. Multiple tools made from clay for use with a loom were found in this surface level.
